How to Change System Hosts File (Vista)

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

So I was waiting for a domain to propagate today(rush rush for a site) and my co-worker showed me a nifty little trick. Change your hosts file:

1)  Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
2)  Right click “Notepad” and select “Run as administrator”
3)  Click “Continue” on the UAC prompt
4)  Click File -> Open
5)  Browse to “C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc”
6)  Change the file filter drop down box from “Text Documents (*.txt)” to “All Files (*.*)”
7)  Select “hosts” and click “Open”
8)  Make the needed changes and close Notepad.  Save when prompted.

Changes needed in this case are as follows(IP address, domain), example below:

127.0.0.1 www.yourdomain.com

You can’t fight the future

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

I started reading this article this morning over coffee and found it fascinating and well written. I couldn’t find a link when I did a quick search but had to share part of it with you. Let me know if you find a link for it less you be a spammer:

“In Silicon Valley the world is divided into two kinds of people - those who “get it”, and those who don’t. The people who get it are the ones who understand that the Internet is the biggest thing that has ever happened in the history of the human race, a wave so huge and so powerful that the only way to cope with it is to jump on and hope to make money building a new world. Those who don’t get it are the ones who try to fight the Internet wave. Entire industries fit that description: movies, music, publishing, real estate, cable-TV providers, operators of mobile-phone networks - the list goes on.

Now, at the top of the list, goes China.

That is the message Google is sending this kerfuffle…..”

Where is Artificial Intelligence today?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

“Arguably, the best design for intelligence created to date remains the biological brain - and scientists are already looking into whether it will one day play a part in AI.”

Best Iphone Apps 2009

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Did You Know? Data gets old.

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

My friend sent me this video the other day, I haven’t watched it since the professor played it for us the first day of one of my classes. I remember thinking, “How much of those are real, hard facts? How much of that data has changed since that video was made?” My friend thinks it’s a bunch of bullshit. He said, “That video cracked me because it’s a bunch of bullshit. How can you be trained in technology that doesn’t exist? ”

I know there’s a lot of you out there who have seen this video and I wonder, what is your opinion? We had a class discussion about it for the rest of my first day in class. It’s nice to see it again and think again, how much more has this data changed?

What the hell else is there other than Adobe?

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

So after we started having major problems with Cold Fusion we were forced to call Adobe. Ughh…I feel bad for the network guy I work with. It must be like trying to call Microsoft and for those of you who have had to make a call to Microsoft you probably understand the frustration - wait, wait, wait, listen to some elevator music, talk to someone who doesn’t speak very good English, wait some more to be transferred to someone you hope does speak English, wait, wait, only to be told they won’t be able to help you and you’ll have to call this number…..well,  you get the idea.

So after having to experience the whole Adobe thing today, I realized, there really isn’t much out there other than Adobe. I’ve been using Adobe products since I first started going to school for this profession and I’ve watched as they rapidly degraded, especially since Macromedia got purchased by Adobe.

To be continued……

IPhone ringtones are expensive

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

I think it’s a rip to already own ( or have purchased) a song on itunes and then have to buy it again for a ringtone. It’s a lot easier than that all you iphone owners: go into itunes (no, not the itunes program, the itunes folder ) from there, find the song you want as a ringtone, copy it and it change it from a  .m4a file to a .m4r file. Wow, new ringtone for your iphone, cool, now we don’t have to hear those same, lame, ringtones that everyone has on their iphone.

Easy solution to above problem, thanks to an old friend for telling me about this site! audiko.net
